Evening Diana;

I have the following in my file for Joseph:

Joseph Motyer also joined the Navy and entered the submarine service. He
was based at Devenport Naval Dockyard, Plymouth and met his wife from
Saltash, just over the river in Cornwall. Duties included a spell on patrol
in the Baltic. Perhaps because of the unhealthy conditions in those early
submarines he fell ill and died of pneumonia aged only 32, having reached
the rank of Chief Petty Officer. His grave is in St. Stephen's churchyard
the old burial ground for the town of Saltash Cornwall.

Additional information:

Born: 19 March 1893, Portland
Died: 17 May 1925, Saltash, Cornwall
Married: Florance Dale, 22 July 1918, St Nicholas Church, Saltash
Her DOB: 31 Dec 1893, Saltash
Her DOD: 1 Oct 1982, Saltash

Children: Norman b. 6 Feb 1921; d. 20 Feb 2002 - Patricia b. 2 May 1924

This data was supplied by Norman's son Phillip.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Richard Hinde

Diana,

The 1901 census on ancestry.com has Joseph M HINDE aged 8, son of Goodwin HINDE and Susanna living at 47 Weston, Portland in the houshold of William SAMPSON (either step father of Goodwin or father of Susanna as he is described as son in law).

Let me know if this is of any interest.

69 (Research):1861 Census of Burton Bradstock. Sarah was listed as being 6 months old and living with her parents in Burton Street, yet her birth registration states she was born in the July quarter of 1862. 1881 Census of Burton Bradstock. Sarah, aged 18, was working for the Parish Priest of St Mary
s church in South Street. 1891 Census: Sarah Motyer was found working as a General Servant-Domestic on the 1891 Census at 45 Dewhurst Road in Hammersmith, London. 1901 Census: Sarah came back to Burton Bradstock, where as Head of the household, she was noted as being 38 years of age and living on her "Own Account". With her was older sister Amelia 48, Amelia
s daughter Jane Motyer (by now a School Teacher) and Gerald Bowcher (Boucher) "COUSIN" aged 4. Gerald
s parents Sidney & Lily Boucher were living in West Bay, so Gerald was possibly visiting for the night.

77 (Research):According to Betty Arel's website, she has this Mary Thistle as having been born in 1674, which would indicate that her mother was her father Richard's 1st wife, Mary Thorndike, as he then married Elizabeth Patch in 1675. But ....

Betty's website also has a 2nd instance of this same person, but born 29 Oct 1675, the same year her father Richard married his 2nd wife, Elizabeth Patch.

So, if her birth date of 1974 is correct, her mother would have to be be Mary Thorndike, because he didn't marry Elizabeth Patch until the following year.

But if her birthdate of 29 Oct 1675 is correct, then her mother could still have been Mary Thorndike, who possibly died during childbirth or shortly after that, and then her father married Elizabeth Patch before the end of the year.

Or ..... Mary Thorndike died earlier in 1675, or even before, and her father Richard married his 2nd wife Elizabeth Patch early in 1675, and then Mary was born 29 Oct 1675.

My guess would be the latter, and that her mother was Elizabeth Patch.

And if that wasn't confusing enough, I originally had her as being born 5 years later, in 1680. No idea where I got that date from.

78 (Research):According to Dick Hayward, he poses the possibility that .....

Could it be that George Watss HILL (i5029) was the son of George Walter HILL (i5035) and Mary Sarah COOPER (i5034)?

Mary Sarah COOPER (i5034) was the daughter of Francis COOPER (i5033) and Elizabeth "Eliza" TODD (i5036).

Mary Sarah COOPER (i5034) also had a briother, William Tood COOPER (i5031), who married Sarah James PEROT (i5032).

William Tood COOPER (i5031) and Sarah James PEROT (i5032) then had a daughter, Eleanor Frances COOPER (i5030).

And then Eleanor Frances COOPER (i5030) married George Watss HILL (i5029), and that is where this loop started.

If that is he case, then George Watss HILL (i5029) and Eleanor Frances COOPER (i5030) were first cousins. But it was not unusual for cousins to marry in that era.
